Development

These are just a few of my developments and ideas for my umberella...

A little painting...
A development of a spirograph...
Turn your head to the right and you can just make out a panel. Showing a map (representing a 'journey) and the top of the brolly...
And a birdseye veiw of one of my ideas!

Christian Dior Fall 2010 Couture Collection

Checking out Style.com and looking up various collections and what could inspire me for my Sunflower Umbrella, I stumbled upon the Christian Dior's Fall 2010 Couture Collection. Isn't it stunning?!

Christian Dior Fall 2010 Couture

This collection has inspired me deeply with the bold colours such as the purples and the shapes of the clothes. Particually in the skirts of the dresses, you can see curves and volume as if it were a child of mother nature and not a treasure of fashion design!
Frilly is a term often used to describe grandma's date-night undies and not a glamorous couture collection. However, Mr Dior has bought 'frills back to life with these beauties! Sit back and be inspired!

Dogs or cats... Dogs are always happy and nice when they are trained but I think I more of a cat person. Thats the animal I would be if i could. How fun does it look to fall out a window and not be hurt!? A lot.
The biggest thing he's concerned about is what position is the most comfiest to sleep in. Bliss!

Essential start to the day...Hit the snooze button!

Fear of... hoovers. not that they dont clean good. theyre just too noisy and angry. plus they scream at you when you accidently feed them a curtain. they need to calm down!!!
Awww, look how cute he is :) ... NOOOOO! Remember, nothing can be that happy all the time and red is a colour of evil. fact.

When i grow up I want to be just like granny! Weirdly I can see it happening!

Nickname... Unfortunatley - Rash. Only since I started college but the sad thing is no one asks why! Everyone just assumes I have a famous rash. This is along with various ones from my mother including Chuck and Flo. She doesnt even know why!
Outrageous behaviour... being truthful, it may not be much, but i wouldnt want someone to do it to me. But this would be spitting in my step-dads drink when he pisses me off. Frequently. He doesnt know, which is part of the fun. Maybe when i have my own kids to hide behind i will tell him. I'll have the camera ready!
Pet peeves... Shiney big foreheads. I stop taking the smallest bit of interest i had in politics because David Cameron's forehead kept looking at me.
I need say no more.

Quote from a movie... "I like my coffee black. Like my men" - Airplane

Recreational activity...Cleaning my room. I clean my room at 9:00 every sunday evening to relax. Dont worry, by wednesday it looks like a charity shop stockroom. Never can find the right outfit!

The delights of London and Westminster university...

Okay, so I've definitely decided that Sounthampton university is the one for me, but being the beautiful, supportive friend, I went with Pip and Evie to look around Westminster. It was as last minute as an hour before we left that the decision was made for me to tag along, but it was such an amazing day! Firstly, I give my complete seal of approval for my Pippy and 'Angie' to attend there as everything was gorgeous, down-to-earth and of a high standard I know they can reach! And secondly, we had a lovely day - esp evening -  in London looking at the shops, landmarks and just being in each others company! The first shop we came across was H&M. We saw people hiking up and down oxford street with these gorgeous shopping bags which were in fact designed by VersacĂ© to be part of the collection designed by herself for H&M! And best of all, we found out from the Evening Standard she was there earlier tha very same day!!
After this, we searched for the vintage shop Beyond Retro just off Oxford Street. Vintage isnt really a typical style i'd go for by the others love it so i wandered as they lapped up the setting! I have to admit, it was really capturising! Ive never seen real stuffed animals just purched on shelves let alone touched real fur coats! It was strange, its a distinctive feel compared to faux and Pip described it perfectly - it has a cold feel to it. Im not one of these anti-fur protesters, I just choose not to wear it. Simple really. I think i definitely would have enjoyed it a lot more if i had more money but it was a day on a budget and i know saving is gonna be more worthwhile! When I have a little disposable income, id go back for sure!
After this we stumbled upon Carnaby Street and to our complete wonderful surprise.. it was  part night! Or something like that. So there were free drinks. free photos and we met the wonderful Bombay Bicycle Club who were DJing in Ben Sherman!
This pretty picture was what we got to take at Lee for freeeeee! We sooo pretttyy!!!

So to sum up, sometimes the best times can be done on a budget and at very last minute! You may need a couple of the besties to help make the time that extra special but im just very lucky to know people like these two!!

Check them out too...

Forgetting the blog names they are creative intresting people... PROMISE !

SORRY GUYSSSS!!

Okay, so I realise its been a while, but i am really going to try and make a good effort to update my blog at least 3 times a week! bit of a push but its gonna be worth it! Its been a MAD few weeks lately! Along with all the stresses of being a second year, ucas and university, we had the unfortunate news of my nan passing away last week. She was a lovely little lady who i love dearly. Its been a hard few days dealing with it but it gets easier day by day.
Anyway, lets not think about the sad stuff! Talking about university, over the past couple of months, we have been looking at universities. We started by looking at Demontfort, but it was the wrong course. We then went on to look at Epson, but it was the wrong campus. Then there was Northbrook, Worthing. NO. WAY. So I had one more uni to look at and quite frankly by this point i was NOT optimistic! But it was Southampton solent who stole my heart. The grounds were me, the accomadation was me and the course...well, it couldnt be more perfect! So its decided! I shall be hoping to study 'Writing Fashion and Culture'! This course has been set in such a way where it opens so many opportunities and gatewaysfor me. Whilst hearing about it, it answered so many questions of which i couldnt even pinpoint to ask! Anyway, to get to the point - I could see myself there. And i think thats what one of the main factors of uni is.

So thats uni! Thats just under a year away so lets get back to the present! After 2 weeks of a 'spinning tops' project we have now developed onto 'Umbrellas' The idea was that the spinning tops project was all about movement. Umbrellas is part two of that project and the aim now is to create an umbrella inspired by a form of movement. So what theme have I found that can be associated with movement? ... SUNFLOWERS! So, yes it is my favourite flower and more important - an inspiration for this blog, but also as we all know sunflowers have a beautiful association with movement. They follow the sun east to west daily. I love that this theme is different and unsual. Some would say like me... but we wont say anymore!

Isnt it just beautiful!

Back on track... almost!

Okay, so my confidence was hit when I went back to college and our drawing skills were refound through drawing a natural enemy – wasps. But as only a week has passed, I have realised that 6 weeks+ of not a lot of drawing may have been the issue. And yet now, with only 5 days back in the saddle, my skills – if I do say so myself – have come along way…
First there was a gold card print- cut, peeled, inked and pressed onto yellow (obviously seen better with a better photo) fabric…
And then there was a sustained drawing – which, if I do say so myself – is pretty impressive due to my previous drawing. I am aware this needs a few final touches but I didn’t have a rubber! And that considered – ive done pretty well…
So, in all, this project is getting better (I begrudgingly say) so hopefully they’ll be a good portfolio on its way!

Wasps... Uh oh!

Today was my first day back to college for my second year. New year means – new project! This project is called The Wasp Project. My initial thought on this project was not one of excitement at all. It just did not appeal. When we were introduced to the project my thoughts were correct – it just did not appeal! I’m hoping that it will get better but for now, the concentrated drawing on an image which is HIGHLY difficult at such a tiny size – just does not appeal!
Not only that, but the thought of a REAL wasp next to me is slightly freaking me out! Yes, I know it’s dead, but still, they’re evil!

This is the first of my sketches of the wasps! Not one of my best pieces by far, but I’m proud enough :)

Why hello there...

So I’ve joined the world of blogging. It’s always interested me since starting college last year and seeing other people and relatives using them as really spurred me on to create one myself. Not forgetting the fact that universities supposedly LOVE it. So I’ll let you all know a little more about me. My name’s Rachel and I live in Basingstoke, Hampshire, UK. Currently in my second year at Alton College, I am 17 years young and studying a Btec in Art and Design. This year I will be specialising this into fashion. Because fashion and textiles is a true passion to me. Growing up with a wonderful grandmother showing me various techniques and interesting creations she has to my main inspiration. Although her house is bursting to the seams with fabric, dyes, threads and sewing machines, the atmosphere is busting with the creativity and inspiration from the business lady with a huge heart. She’s also an avid blogger – so I hope your checking this out Grandma!
I hope to add to this blog regularly so people can find out more about my life, my inspirations and my loopy brain and what it has to offer!
